What began in September 2021 as what seemed like a single diverticulitis episode has unfolded into a much longer and more complex health journey than we ever anticipated. In 2024, Tom began experiencing chronic flare-ups that led to major colon surgery, repeated rounds of antibiotics, severe microbiome depletion, and eventually a nervous system crisis triggered by prolonged insomnia.
Since then, healing has been slow and non-linear.
Tom has lost over 60 pounds. His strength and endurance are greatly reduced. He has not been able to travel and minister since September 2025, and recent setbacks have left him unable to sustain even part-time work.
We are pursuing comprehensive medical and functional care to address the root causes of inflammation and restore his health. While we have seen progress, many of the treatments and recovery-related expenses are not covered, and the financial strain has been significant, especially as ministry income has decreased during this time.
We do not know how long this season will last. Our prayer is that it is short. Our responsibility is to prepare wisely if it is longer.

Tom's Health Timeline Hightlights:
- September 2021 – First diverticulitis episode treated with antibiotics. It appeared resolved, though intermittent digestive discomfort followed in the years after.
- September 2024 – Severe flare led to CT scans and extensive testing. Prostate cancer ruled out. Official diagnosis: chronic diverticulitis.
- Sept 2024 – Feb 2025 – Approximately 7–8 severe flare-ups requiring repeated rounds of antibiotics. Eating often had to pause during flares due to pain. Significant weight loss began.
- January 2025 – We relocated from Texas to Florida in the middle of active illness.
- February 2025 – Colonoscopy confirmed disease localized to the sigmoid colon. Surgery recommended.
- June 2025 – Partial colectomy performed. 12 inches of diseased colon removed. Surgery itself was successful, and we believed this would resolve the issue.
- Fall 2025 – Persistent bladder pressure led to urology evaluation. Inflamed prostate (prostatitis) confirmed. Additional antibiotics required. Inflammation no longer appeared localized.
- Late August 2025 – Following an inflammatory reaction and steroid injection, Tom developed severe insomnia — something he had never struggled with before.
- September 2025 onward – Acute sleep crisis (including several days without sleep), anxiety symptoms, and nervous system strain. Sleep has remained fragile and inconsistent since.
- Late November 2025 – Comprehensive GI-MAP testing revealed severe bacterial undergrowth — confirming significant microbiome depletion after repeated antibiotics and medical interventions.
- Winter 2025–2026 – Began restorative protocols including microbiome rebuilding and peptide therapy. Encouraging progress at times, but healing has been non-linear.
- Present (February 2026) – Recent flare with ongoing systemic inflammation. CT scan completed; awaiting results. Estimated functional capacity approximately 40%.
